AMERICAN PLAYHOUSE: ROANOAK {PART 1 OF 3} (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic anthology series. The first of three parts in this historical recreation about Roanoak Island during the 16th century, which became known as the "lost colony" of North Carolina when the inhabitants vanished without a trace. The story is told in flashback by the governor of Roanoak, John White. In this episode, White and a ship of British soldiers, sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh, make the first voyage to the shores of Roanoak, where they disrupt the lives of a local Native American tribe. Despite the language barrier, the Native Americans welcome the strange men in the hopes of trading with them. The British want to mine for gold and silver in a large bay that is rumored to be near Roanoak, and they return to England to plan another excursion to find the bay. Two Native Americans, Wanchese and Manteo, join them on the trip back to England to learn British customs; the British are eager to teach English to the Native Americans in order to learn the exact location of the bay. The scenes in which Native Americans appear are subtitled in English. The program ends with a preview of "Roanoak, Part Two." Continues with T:21271.
