Summary
One in this series of weekly public affairs programs, hosted by David Brinkley. This installment provides up-to-date reports on the Persian Gulf War with Iraq. Reporters Sam Donaldson in Saudi Arabia, Bob Zelnick at the Pentagon, John McWethy at the Department of State, Brit Hume from the White House, Dean Reynolds in Jerusalem, and Pierre Salinger in London each provide perspectives on recent events in the war from their particular locations. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of the Allied forces in the Gulf, speaks with Donaldson in Saudi Arabia, and with panelists David Brinkley, Cokie Roberts, and George Will by satellite. Highlights include: Schwarzkopf's reports that the air campaign is going as planned; the improbability that Allied forces will hunt down Saddam Hussein; a discussion about defeating Iraq's Republican Guard; a debate on the wisdom of calling on reserve forces instead of instituting a draft; and news of the success in crippling Iraq's nuclear, chemical, and biological capabilities, as well as the communications center in Baghdad. Next, Israeli Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu joins the panel by satellite, and they discuss the following topics, among others: Israel's plans to retaliate after Iraq's missile attacks; estimates on Hussein's ability to rebuild Iraq's nuclear capabilities; whether the U.S. is making deals with Israel concerning the country's retaliation against Iraq; potential Middle East peace conferences; and questions regarding the U.S. and Allied forces' real, and possibly hidden, objectives in the Gulf War. Finally, the panel comments on the advanced technology of U.S. weapons, and the ramifications of their strong effectiveness against Iraq, and Brinkley ends with a brief recapitulation of the latest news from the Gulf.
