WESSEX TALES: A TRAGEDY OF TWO AMBITIONS (TV)

Summary

Broadcast as part of a series of dramatizations from Thomas Hardy's writings, this tale examines the shameful actions of two brothers who have attained positions of respectability and now must confront the lowly status of their father. Writer Dennis Potter's adaptation is respectful to the moral underpinnings of the Hardy short story, and he avoids overlaying any of his characteristic vision to the teleplay. For example, in Potter's work there is always a possibility of reconciliation between father and sons, and yet here, as in Hardy's story, there is none.
