Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. This feature film is based on the true story of Jaime Escalante, a man who leaves his high-paying job in electronics to teach mathematics to Latino high school students in East Los Angeles. Escalante subscribes to the belief that students' abilities will rise to their teacher's expectations, and, in an atmosphere of gangs, violence, and low self-esteem, he inspires students who lack faith in their academic potential to excel beyond anyone's expectations. He convinces his students that, through dedication and hard work, they can pass the Advanced Placement Calculus test. Their achievements, however, are threatened by institutionalized prejudice.
