JIM HENSON'S "THE STORYTELLER": GREEK MYTHS: THESEUS & THE MINOTAUR (TV)
Summary
One in this series of folk tales and legends based on Greek myths -- presented as a follow-up to the earlier series "The Storyteller" -- featuring fantasy characters from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. In this episode, the Storyteller recalls the fearful tale of Theseus and the Minotaur. Every seven years, in order to appease King Minos of Crete, the Athenians send seven male youths and seven maidens into the inescapable labyrinth to be sacrificed to the Minotaur, a terrifying creature that is half-man and half-bull. Determined to end this bloody ritual, Theseus, the son of King Aegeus of Athens, sails to Crete to kill the Minotaur. He promises his father that if he survives he will replace the ship's black sail with a white one. In Crete, King Minos's daughter, Ariadne, falls in love with Theseus; she makes him promise to take her back to Athens with him, and secretly gives him information that helps him to slay the Minotaur. But Theseus fails to honor his promises to Ariadne and his father, with tragic consequences, and must bear burden of a guilty conscience for the rest of his life.
