RED NIGHTMARE (TV)

Summary

This dramatic presentation, hosted and narrated by Jack Webb, examines life in a typical American town if it were infiltrated by communism. The program features a day in the life of Jerry Donovan, an average American who takes his liberties for granted and avoids responsibility. But his troubles are minor compared to those imposed by a Soviet state. Webb explains that while Donovan sleeps, he has a nightmare about life in his town under Communist rule. In this dream, Donovan cannot make personal phone calls without permission, his neighbors are told by officials to infiltrate economic and political life throughout the U.S., and he is forced to be a speaker for the Communist Party. His children leave the "bourgeois" family unit to work for Communist collective causes, he is given quotas to achieve at work, and churches are abolished. Eventually, he is arrested for subversion and treason. The state needs no evidence to convict him, and even his own family turns against him in this nightmare. Awakening from the dream, Donovan is profoundly affected and grateful that he lives in a land of liberty.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, 1999.
