20/20 {BARBARA WALTERS INTERVIEWS MUAMMAR EL-QADAFFI} {SEGMENT} (TV)
Summary
A segment from this series of news magazine programs. In the segment, Barbara Walters, with the help of a translator, interviews Muammar el-Qadaffi, the leader of Libya. Host Hugh Downs opens by briefly discussing el-Qadaffi, referring to his being considered by some as "one of the most frightening names in the world today." During Walters questioning, el-Qadaffi touches on such topics as: his thoughts on America; what he feels are the two "parts" of America; what he thinks is the biggest misconception about him in America; his opinions on President George H.W. Bush; whether he will renounce international terrorism; whether the U.S. State Department is lying in their reports on him; whether he houses terrorists in his country; why he feels that George Washington was as much of a terrorist as Palestinian Abu Nadal, accused by the American government as heading "the most dangerous terrorist group"; his support of the Irish Republican Army; whether he is "mad" or "unstable"; his thoughts on capital punishment; whether he wants to destroy Israel; and how to deal with the Palestine/Israel conflict. In the next segment, el-Qadaffi touches on more topics such as: the chemical plant in his country that the American government believes may be making poison gas for warfare; whether he will let neutral inspectors visit the plant; his appeal for release of all hostages in the Middle East; and the recent bombing of his house. Then, el-Qadaffi introduces his wife, Safiya, and four of his seven children. Next, el-Qadaffi offers a message -- in English -- to the American people. Afterward, Walters offers her thoughts on el-Qadaffi with Downs. Commercials deleted. This program is closed-captioned.
