MYSTERY!: DALGLIESH: DEATH OF AN EXPERT WITNESS {PART 4 OF 6} (TV)
Summary
One in this mystery anthology series. Host Vincent Price introduces part four of director Herbert Wise's six-part television adaptation of P.D. James's complex, cunning mystery novel. The program focuses on Chief Inspector Dalgliesh's murder investigation, conducted in the shadows of Hoggatt's Forensic Science Laboratory. When additional murders occur, Dalgliesh begins to investigate people associated with the lab, some of whom may be linked to the grisly crimes. In part four, Dalgliesh becomes entrenched in the investigation of the murder of Hoggatt's unpopular chief biologist, Dr. Edwin Lorrimer. The chief inspector's investigation is interrupted, however, when the original case he came to investigate -- the murder of a young woman near the lab -- is apparently solved. Inspector Doyle informs Dalgliesh that the killer, who has since committed suicide, was the jealous husband of the woman and not a serial murderer. Doyle's judgement, however, is questioned because he and Dr. Clifford Bradley become the chief suspects in Lorrimer's murder. Due to forensic evidence, both men are known to have been at the laboratory when the slaying occurred: Bradley is linked by traces of his vomit, while Doyle is connected to the crime site by the tire tracks of his car. As both men provide their alibis, Dalgliesh begins to untangle the web of deceit that shrouds the murderer. Apparently, Stella Mawson has already seen through the web: she informs her lover, Angela Foley, who is Dr. Lorrimer's cousin, that she already knows the identity of the murderer.
