MTV NEWS SPECIAL REPORT: SEX IN THE '90s (TV)

Summary

One in this series of programs that focus on the sexual issues and themes that affect the young MTV audience. A few notable figures from popular culture open by commenting on their individual definitions of the world "sexy." Actress Kirstie Alley says that she finds bad boy rockers Guns 'n' Roses sexy, while rapper Chuck D states that black women turn him on. Jon Bon Jovi says that Michelle Pfeiffer is the sexiest woman he can think of, and a clip from Pfeiffer's film "The Fabulous Baker Boys" is shown. The next segment focuses on the way in which attitudes toward sexuality have evolved since the "prim and proper" 1950s. That decade is represented by a series of humorously dated and scientifically incorrect filmstrips dealing with sex, as well as footage of censored television appearances by Little Richard and Elvis Presley on "The Ed Sullivan Show." In the clips dedicated to the 1960s and 1970s, narrator Kurt Loder discusses the casual sexuality of the James Bond films, and interviews with groupies who stalked artists like Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin are run. The program then briefly explores sexual politics through the ages, focusing largely on the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on abortion and the Stonewall clash that sparked the gay-rights movement. A report on the 1980s begins with a discussion of the fallout from the sudden appearance of AIDS: safe sex was suddenly in vogue. Even notorious lothario Hugh Hefner got married, Loder points out. The next segment reports on the answers given in a sex-related survey of college students at the University of California, Berkeley. The program concludes with brief segments on the censorship of a record by 2 Live Crew and a man addicted to pornography, plus a debate about whether MTV videos objectify women. Commercials deleted.
