Summary
One in this series of historical documentaries that chronicles the breadth and diversity of Earth's civilizations, explores the fundamental differences among cultures, and examines the unique ways that people perceive the world. In this program, host Michael Wood explores the cultural and spiritual legacy of India and how it significantly differs from the West. Topics covered include Shiva, India's oldest divinity; the sacred quality of the Ganges River; the lost pre-Aryan city of Mohenjo-daro; the Aryan migration to Northern India in 2000 B.C.; the Rig Veda, the most important of the Sanskrit poems; the enduring importance of the philosophical and religous dialogue; the Bhagavad Gita; ruler Ashoka's (269-232 B.C.) epiphanic conversion to non-violence; ruler Akbar's (1556-1605) belief in religious tolerance for all; past and present conflicts between the nation's Hindus and Muslims; and the vital role of village life in maintaining India's cultural traditions in the face of British colonialism.
