KNOTS LANDING: FOR APPEARANCE'S SAKE (TV)
Summary
One in this night-time drama serial, spun off from the series "Dallas," about the residents of the small southern California community of Knots Landing. Highlights of this episode include the following: the police search for Karen MacKenzie's kidnapper now that she has returned home after surviving being abducted and almost murdered; Greg Sumner, who secretly saved Karen's life, keeps quiet about his involvement; Greg arranges a live television debate when it appears that Gary is gaining in the state-senate race against Greg's brother, Peter Hollister; Mack tells a surprised Karen that he has a daughter with his first love, Anne; Gary is called to pick up Olivia at school because she has been suspended for cheating on an exam; Olivia angrily confronts Gary and Jill about their affair, blaming Jill for destroying Abby and Gary's marriage; Gary tells Olivia that he and her mother are only living together for appearance's sake during the senate race; Mack brings his daughter Paige to the house to meet Karen, and the two women seem instantly wary of each other; Mack intercepts a bouquet of flowers sent to Karen from her kidnapper with an anonymous threatening message attached; Abby is furious when, after arranging for Gary to meet with an important political columnist at their ranch, Gary misses the appointment; after overhearing her parents argue, troubled Olivia smokes marijuana in her bathroom; Jill tells Gary he must concentrate on the campaign and let his children take a back seat for a while; Abby confronts Olivia about her cheating and Olivia tries to make Abby understand that she needs more attention from her, but when Abby is unyielding in her criticism, Olivia counters that Abby is only upset because of how Olivia's failures will reflect on her; when Abby departs, an angry Olivia steals her mother's car and drives off; Paige confides in Karen's son Michael that she doesn't think Karen likes her; Karen tells Mack that Paige is pretty and worldly, but Karen's impressions seem restrained; Lilimae Clements tells her daughter Valene Ewing that she doesn't trust newcomer Paige; the police bring a mug shot of Phil Harbert to the MacKenzie house and Karen immediately identifies him as her kidnapper; the police tell Mack and Karen that Greg Sumner called in and tipped them off to Harbert, claiming he had a hunch; the police suggest that Harbert was harboring a grudge because Mack's testimony had put him away for a crime years earlier, but Mack is suspicious that Sumner is somehow involved in the kidnapping; Peter Hollister and Abby go to bed together at the ranch and are discovered by a blasŽ Gary when he arrives home early; minutes before the live debate is about to air, Gary gets a call at the television studio from the police and learns that Olivia has had a car accident and is being detained for driving without a license; Gary goes to get Olivia, hugs the frightened girl, and misses the debate; Phil Harbert arrives at Sumner's office and demands that the former senator help him get out of the country or he'll tell the police that Greg hired him to kidnap Karen; Mack and Karen arrive to see Sumner while Harbert is there.
