SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE {JEREMY IRONS, FISHBONE} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of live, late-night comedy/variety programs featuring topical satire. Jeremy Irons hosts this program with Fishbone as musical guest. In his opening monologue Irons attempts to ignore his Oscar nomination for his performance in "Reversal of Fortune." (The Academy Awards ceremony is to be held on the Monday following this program.) Sketches include the following: the "Pumping Up with Hanz and Franz" characters (Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon) insist on fighting in the Persian Gulf War although it is already over; Rob Schneider portrays the "Richmeister" who enjoys "making copies" during an office going-away party; Irons portrays Sherlock Holmes, whose deductive powers ruin the fun at his surprise birthday party; Irons, Carvey and Phil Hartman play singing cowboys whose song questions their fitness for their vocation; Dennis Miller presides at the anchor desk for "Weekend Update," which features a brief appearance by boxer Razor Ruddock and a commentary by Chris Rock on how to avoid violent encounters at movie theaters showing the film "New Jack City"; Jeremy Irons appears in sketch set in a bar where he is surrounded by three women who adore his English accent and coerce him into making a variety of highly personal statements to them; Irons portrays former psychiatrist/gruesome serial murderer Hannibal Lecter as he shares a prison cell with an emotionally-troubled inmate played by Phil Hartman; Mike Myers and Dana Carvey portray Wayne and Garth in an episode of "Wayne's World" which has the duo making their Oscar picks; there is a commercial parody for "Buzz Pen," a pen which can etch messages into Afros, and two "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey" segments; Irons appears in a commercial parody for the "Looney Toons Classics" album, which offers classical music associated with cartoons; and the short film "Football Days" -- about a guy who shows up for football practice every day even though he is not on the team -- is presented. Fishbone offers two musical performances, including "Sunless Saturday." The program also includes a commercial parody for "McIntosh Junior" children's computer during which the program's sound becomes inaudible. Includes commercials and promos.
