MISTER ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD {SNOW PEOPLE AND THE WARM PUSSYCAT OPERA} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of programs for young children, hosted by Fred Rogers, which uses puppets and music to teach patience and cooperation, while providing guidance to help children cope with feelings and frustrations. This program features one of the operas that Mister Rogers has created for the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, where hand-puppet characters interact with humans in the mythical kingdom of King Friday XIII. In an introduction to the opera, "The Snow People and the Warm Pussycat," John Reardon teaches Henrietta Pussycat to concentrate and envision the kind of opera that they might create. The opera begins as Lady Aberlin interrupts Franois Clemmons and Yoshi Ito during their game of badminton. When they briskly dismiss her, she sings an aria vowing revenge. She enlists the help of magical Lady Elaine Fairchilde, who teaches Lady Aberlin how to cast a spell that creates snow. When she tries her new skill, however, Lady Aberlin accidentally turns her two friends into snowmen and feels terrible. With the help of the neighbors, however, she melts away her vengeance with warm thoughts. Together they sing "Good People Sometimes Feel Bad Things," and the opera concludes on a positive note. Afterwards, Mister Rogers talks about events in the opera and tries to figure out the characters' conflicting feelings. In other highlights, Rogers explains the purpose of flash cards and ways to use them.
