BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 6: JULIA (TV)

Summary

Part six in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, Charles returns to art school in Paris in the spring of 1925 believing that he will hear no more of Brideshead. Rex arrives in search of Sebastian, who had been left under his charge on the way to a doctor, but got away. Rex reveals that Lady Marchmain regrets her falling out with Charles and that she is gravely ill. Since she will not approve of Rex's offer of marriage to Julia, Rex is on his way to see Lord Marchmain to get his approval instead. Charles then turns his reflections to Julia. He relates the tale of Julia's stormy relationship and secret engagement to Rex, a non-Catholic whom she had met on the continent during Charles' first summer at Brideshead. Forbidden by Lady Marchmain to marry outside the faith, Julia decided to forsake her religion. Charles relates that after losing Sebastian, Rex went on to secure permission to marry Julia from Lord Marchmain. He even converted to Catholicism that the couple could marry properly. In the meantime, however, Brideshead did some investigating and found out that Rex was previously married -- and divorced. Julia and Rex begged the family to keep this a secret, but they refused, so the couple got married in a Protestant Church without her family's approval. After a year, it became clear that their marriage wasn't working and Julia and Rex separated. Charles, as narrator, reports that he learned all this 10 years later.
