BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 7: THE UNSEEN HOOK (TV)

Summary

Part seven in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, Charles returns from the continent around the time of the General Strike of 1926. He enrolls in the defense corps and seems consumed by the struggle against the working classes. Julia learns of his return and informs him that Lady Marchmain is dying. At a party, Charles runs into Anthony Blanche, who updates him on Sebastian's whereabouts, saying that he last saw him in Tangiers living with a German man. He thinks that they're currently in French Morocco. Charles visits Marchmain House where Julia apologizes to him on behalf of her mother and asks him to help find Sebastian since Lady Marchmain is so near death. Charles goes to Casablanca and finds Sebastian living in the native village with Kurt, his German companion. Kurt has shot himself in the foot and appears to be living off Sebastian, who is currently in the hospital suffering from influenza. Charles visits him and tells him that his mother is very sick and would like to see him before she dies, but Sebastian isn't well enough to travel. When Sebastian starts smuggling alcohol into the hospital, the doctor says that he must go home. Charles escorts him back to Kurt, who believes his foot injury to be more serious than Sebastian's condition and bosses him around the house. That same afternoon, Lady Marchmain is buried at Brideshead.
