BRIDESHEAD REVISITED, PART 9: ORPHANS OF THE STORM (TV)

Summary

Part nine in this eleven-part adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel about Charles Ryder and his relationship with the aristocratic Flyte family, residents of the Brideshead estate. In this episode, with Celia and most of the other passengers sick in bed, Charles and Julia spend the entire day together, roaming the ship, dining, and talking. They kiss for the first time on their way to dinner. The next day, Celia is still bedridden and again the two spend the day together. Finally, they go back to Julia's cabin where they make love. Charles and Julia arrange to meet again in London. Celia begins to grow suspicious when Charles keeps coming up with excuses for staying away from home. After an exhibit of his work, Charles meets Anthony Blanche for a drink and Anthony reminds Charles of the time he warned him of the Flyte family's sinister charm. Charles and Julia meet on the train to Brideshead, where Rex is now residing. They realize that everyone now knows or suspects that they are having an affair. While at Brideshead they conclude that it seems as if it's they against the world and determine that no one can hurt them tonight. They wonder for how many nights that will be true.
