NORTHERN EXPOSURE: CICELY {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman establishes his first medical practice. In this episode, Ned, an elderly stranger, explains the origins of the town of Cicely by talking about two outsiders -- Mace and his sidekick, Kit -- who controlled the turn-of-the-century mining camp. But then two determined women who had resolve and grace, Roslyn and Cicely, transformed the Alaskan outpost into a utopian mecca, "a colony of free thinkers and artists." The women educated and civilized the ruffians, introducing them to poetry readings and interpretive dances. For young Ned, his new, civilized life is a radical gift that prompts him to confess his love to Cicely, but she explains that her heart belongs to Roslyn. For Sally, a young prostitute enslaved to Mace, the transformation is self-affirming, and she begins to fall in love with an older man named Abe. As rumors about the cultural mecca spread, Franz Kafka visits the town and meets a missionary named Mary. The idyllic community is threatened, however, by an ominous illness and by Mace's intention to regain control of the town. When the elderly Ned finishes his story, one of the listeners finds a new appreciation for the town where "the human spirit triumphs." Commercials deleted.
