SALLY JESSY RAPHAEL: NINETY-TWO PEOPLE IN ONE PERSON (TV)

Summary

One in this talk show series hosted by Sally Jessy Raphael. First, Raphael mentions that this is the first show to be taped in her new Connecticut studio. She then welcomes author Truddi Chase, a woman who has ninety-two different personalities. Using the first person plural, Truddi discusses the following topics, among others: the reason the personalities are called "the troops"; the sexual abuse that she endured daily from ages two to sixteen, without any intervention from her mother; the way a human mind can "give birth" to a new personality as a defense system; Mean Joe, the protective black man inside Truddi, and other personalities like Catherine, Elvira, Lambchop, and the Seventh Horseman; their decision not to integrate; and the collaborative writing effort by the ninety-two personalities -- a novel entitled, "When Rabbit Howls." Next, Truddi's therapist, Dr. Robert Phillips, Jr., recalls the initial diagnosis, and Dr. Frances Howland, assistant professor of psychiatry at Yale University, notes that many people have undetectable multiple personalities. Other topics include: the way each personality lived a solitary existence until learning, one by one, about the others; waking up in the course of another personality's nightmare; stretches of lost time; physical changes in Truddi's handwriting and eye color, depending on the personality present; and the way she and her doctor ascertained that exactly ninety-two different personalities exist. Dr. Howland adds that Truddi's condition is a normal response to unnatural trauma. Sally Jessy Raphael concludes the program by introducing the mayor of New Haven.
