ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE: A CONVERSATION WITH DARYL GATES (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly news programs. In this program, Ted Koppel talks with Police Chief Daryl Gates about the Los Angeles riots. The program opens with footage of the riots, including scenes of the brutal arrest of Rodney King, the subsequent trial of the police officers, and the verdict of not guilty that was handed down. Also included are interviews with Los Angeles police officers Steve Zaby, Sgt. Dennis Zine, and Lt. Mike Moulin, and city council member Mark Ridley-Thomas, who comment on Gates's behavior on the eve of the riots and on the paralysis of the L.A. police force. As Daryl Gates begins his interview with Koppel, Gates is a bit upset, having seen an earlier primetime special on ABC, which he believes is an attack on his character. Gates scolds Koppel and then discusses the following topics, among others: the "dysfunctional" aspects of the L.A. police department, the current riot control plan, the "mistake" made by Lt. Moulin, his own whereabouts during the riots, the officers he placed in charge of the situation, his decision to stay on the L.A. police force for over a year after the riots occurred, the "lack of communication" between himself and the mayor of Los Angeles on the eve of the riots, and the decision to call in the National Guard. At the end of the program, Gates summarizes his feelings about the riots and says that the electronic media should accept some blame for causing the escalating riots. This program is closed-captioned.
