HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: HOME FIRES BURNING (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramatic specials presented by Hallmark. This drama concerns newspaper editor Jake Tibbetts, a feisty and stubborn Southern patriarch who attempts to reconcile with his loved ones during the final hours of World War II. Jake often attempts to rile the town with a fiery editorial style, but his tumultuous manner, however, aggravates his family's emotional wounds. The Tibbets family's problems include Jake's estrangement from his son, Henry, whose first wife, Hazel, was killed in a car accident years before. Jake has never forgiven Henry for possibly drinking while driving in the accident, nor has he absolved Henry for abandoning his young son while he was overcome by grief. Jake's anger over this relationship creates friction with his wife, Pastine, with his grandson, Lonnie, and with his best friend Rosh Benefield. When Henry is thought to have been killed in military service, however, Jake refuses to believe the terrible news, and he later learns the truth. On his sixty-fifth birthday, Jake Tibbetts, although now feeling daunted and older, must renew old relationships and decide if he has the strength to continue editing his newspaper. (Beginning with the live telecast of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on December 24, 1951, Hallmark has sponsored a series of dramatic specials which, since 1952, has aired under the title "Hallmark Hall of Fame." From 1952 to 1955 Hallmark also presented "Hallmark Hall of Fame," a weekly half-hour or hour-long dramatic anthology series, usually hosted by Sarah Churchill. The first program, "Dr. Serocold," was televised in January 1952 under the title "Hallmark Television Theatre." This series also ran under the title "Hallmark Summer Theatre" in July and August 1952.)
