MYSTERY!: PRIME SUSPECT I: EPISODE 1 (TV)
Summary
One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces part one of this three-part program, set in contemporary London, in which an ambitious detective faces sexual discrimination when she takes over her first homicide investigation. In part one, Scotland Yard apprehends businessman George Marlow for the gruesome rape and murder of a prostitute, but before Det. Chief Inspector Shefford can close the case, he dies of a heart attack. Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, who feels that she has been sidestepped for past promotions, requests control of the investigation. Despite opposition from the "old boy network," Tennison moves quickly and finds that the body has been misidentified. She sets about establishing the identity of the victim and building a case against Marlow. When Sgt. Otley, a vocal opponent of Tennison's authority, sabotages crucial evidence, Tennison is forced to release the prime suspect. A second corpse, similarly mangled, is soon uncovered and the police fear they may have a serial killer on their hands. As Tennison renews her efforts to implicate Marlow, she becomes singularly devoted to the details of the case, to the detriment of her private life.
