MYSTERY!: PRIME SUSPECT 1: EPISODE 2 (TV)

Summary

One in this mystery anthology series. Host Diana Rigg introduces part two of this three-part program, set in contemporary London, in which an ambitious detective faces sexual discrimination when she takes over her first homicide investigation. In part two, DCI Jane Tennison fails to find a credible witness who can place prime suspect George Marlow at the scene of a gruesome prostitute murder. Tennison interviews Marlow's employer and finds that Marlow had been transferred around the country quite a few times before settling in London. A records check stretching back ten years provides a startling revelation: Marlow's appearance in various cities coincided with the grisly murder of a prostitute, all of them committed in the same fashion. Following one of these leads, Tennison travels to Manchester and chats with the victim's co-workers. She is surprised to learn that the deceased girl had relations with the late DCI Shefford, Tennison's predecessor. When Tennison confronts Sgt. Otley and Superintendent Kernan about Shefford's entanglement in the affair, she is subtly warned to back off. As the investigation continues, Tennison begins to doubt herself and fears being replaced if she doesn't produce solid results soon. Meanwhile, her long-time boyfriend breaks off their relationship, having had his affections repeatedly neglected by the increasingly obsessed detective.

Acquisition and cataloging of this program was made possible by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
