ROBERT F. KENNEDY NEBRASKA PRIMARY (TV)

Summary

John Frankenheimer directed this political campaign film in support of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's effort to win the 1968 Nebraska Democratic Primary. Kennedy addresses the public, journalists and local civic groups and introduces his wife Ethel and children David, Michael, and Courtney during a whistle-stop train trip through the Cornhusker state. He comments on the following issues: the racial divisions in the United States; the lawlessness that arises from race riots; the need to reform the nation's welfare system; a proposal to unite private enterprise with government in order to combat unemployment; the problems facing farmers; his relationship with labor organizations; the state of the military; the Vietnam War, including the mistakes he made while serving as attorney general during his brother John F. Kennedy's administration; why other countries no longer believe America will do the right thing; and why America is not the sum of its economy or military might, but is defined by how it treats its own people. Ethel Kennedy recounts an inspirational anecdote concerning a meeting her husband had with a child in Washington, D.C. At the film's conclusion, Kennedy quotes Nobel Prize-winning writer Albert Camus, who said he "would not exchange his time for any other time" because, although it was the most dangerous, it was also the most interesting.
