NYPD BLUE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The first in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this episode, Detective Andy Sipowicz is testifying against Alfonse Giadelo, who is member of the Marino crime family. The case doesn't work out the way Sipowicz expected and he takes out his frustration on the assistant district attorney Sylvia Costas and then on himself at the local bar. Lieutenant Arthur Fancy informs Sipowicz's partner and longtime friend, Detective John Kelly, that Sipowicz is uncontrollable and is being pulled off the streets. Kelly promises to help Sipowicz shape up and offers to take full responsibility if his efforts fail. Meanwhile, Kelly and his wife Laura are in the process of splitting up, but can't seem to make a clean break of it. Sipowicz roughs up Giadelo in public and Kelly arrives to stop him before anything drastic happens. Internal Affairs learns of Sipowicz's behavior and takes his gun and shield away from him until the investigation is over. Kelly receives a new partner for the time being, the young and willing, Officer James Martinez. After being suspended, Sipowicz heads for the bar and after a few drinks, goes home with a prostitute he's been with before. Sipowicz doesn't realize he's been set up until Giadelo comes out of the bathroom and shoots Sipowicz several times. An intense investigation is mounted to find the gunman who left Sipowicz in critical condition. Kelly doesn't care about the investigation and instead takes it upon himself to go right to the source, Angelo Marino. While all this is happening, Kelly becomes romantically involved with Officer Licalsi. When Kelly refuses to give in to Marino's offer of protection for the detective, Marino tells Licalsi to find a way to kill Kelly. Commercials deleted.
