HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: LOVE IS NEVER SILENT (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas presented by Hallmark. In this production, set during the 1940s, young Margaret Ryder struggles to find her independence after growing up as an interpreter for her deaf parents. From a young age Margaret translates her parents sign language for the hearing world. Mr. and Mrs. Ryder depend on her for everything and Margaret's entire life revolves around speaking for them. As she grows up, Margaret avoids getting close to anyone in the hearing world for fear of what people will think when they learn that she and her family are different. When World War II begins, Margaret engages in correspondence with her friend William, who has joined the army. When William returns home from basic training, he wants to meet Margaret's parents, but she will not let him. Finally, when he asks her to marry him, she tells him her secret. She is surprised to learn that it does not bother him that her parents are deaf and agrees to elope with him before he leaves for Europe. Mr. and Mrs. Ryder are dismayed when they learn of the marriage since they know it means she will be leaving them. When William's tour of duty is over, he and Margaret move into a small apartment at a university. Mr. and Mrs. Ryder visit the young couple and disapprove of their living situation. When they learn that Margaret is pregnant, they tell her that she is irresponsible and cannot afford to raise a child. Her mother asks her to move back home with them. Margaret tells her parents that she has been responsible her entire life, but not for herself. She feels it is time to lead her own life. Mr. and Mrs. Ryder are forced to come to terms with this change. Commercials deleted.
