HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas presented by Hallmark. Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel "Notre Dame de Paris," this production tells the story of the deformed, fifteenth-century bell-ringer Quasimodo, and Esmeralda, the good-hearted gypsy woman with whom he falls in love. Abandoned by his natural parents as an infant, Quasimodo has grown up in Notre Dame cathedral in the care of the ruthless archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. The hunchback becomes smitten with Esmerelda after she gives him water and sympathy following his public flogging. The gypsy beauty's largesse also extends to Pierre, a thief whom she marries to save from execution. Unfortunately, Dom Claude becomes obsessed with Esmeralda as well, and will do anything to get her. He murders her lover Phoebus, forcing her to confess to the crime in hopes of blackmailing her into returning his affections. A steadfast Esmeralda is about to be hanged when Quasimodo snatches her and gives her sanctuary in the cathedral. Frustrated in his quest to break Esmerelda's resistance, Dom Claude obtains a parliamentary order to break her sanctuary. Upon hearing of this, Pierre enlists his fellow thieves to storm the cathedral. When Quasimodo and Esmeralda see an angry crowd approaching Notre Dame they presume the mob has come to kill her. Quasimodo single-handedly quells the raid, but Pierre persists. Finally, with the bell-ringerÕs help, Pierre and Esmeralda are able to escape. Quasimodo, who once told Esmeralda that he would give his life for her, ends up doing just that. Includes commercials.

(Beginning with the live telecast of the opera "Amahl and the Night Visitors" on December 24, 1951, Hallmark has sponsored a series of dramatic specials which since 1952 have been titled "Hallmark Hall of Fame." From 1952 to 1955 Hallmark also presented "Hallmark Hall of Fame," a weekly half-hour dramatic anthology series hosted by Sarah Churchill. The first program, "Dr. Serocold," was televised in January 1952 under the title "Hallmark Television Theatre." This series also ran under the title "Hallmark Summer Theatre" in July and August 1952.)
