MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE: STORYBOOK PLAYHOUSE 2: PACKAGE 6 {MOLLY'S PILGRIM; LYLE, LYLE CROCODILE: THE MUSICAL: THE HOUSE ON EAST 88TH STREET; HARRY, THE FAT BEAR SPY}

Summary

Prepared for The Museum of Television & Radio screening series "Storybook Playhouse," this compilation of stories features works based upon the writings of Barbara Cohen, Bernard Waber, and Gahan Wilson. In "Molly's Pilgrim," a Jewish girl from the Soviet Union, who has recently moved with her parents to the United States, finds it difficult to fit in with her classmates. The girls in her class make fun of the way she talks, dresses, and eats. One day for homework she has to make a pilgrim for Thanksgiving. Molly tries to make it look like the one in her history book but cannot finish it before she has to go to sleep, so her mother completes it. When Molly sees it the next morning she is dismayed to find that it looks like her instead of an American pilgrim. Her parents explain that she is a pilgrim too since they came to the United States to get their freedom. When the teacher in class sees her doll, she thinks that Molly misunderstood the assignment. Molly finds that she must explain her pilgrim and herself to the class in order to be accepted and understood. In the animated children's musical "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile: The House on East 88th Street," Mr. and Mrs. Prim and their young son Joshua move into a new house on East 88th Street in New York, and discover that there is a crocodile living in their bathtub. A mysterious stranger, who calls himself Hector Valenti, arrives at their door. He says that he is the owner of the crocodile and then leaves them with a note explaining that the reptile's name is Lyle and that he eats only Turkish caviar. At first the new owners of the house do not want to keep their uninvited houseguest, but when Lyle comes downstairs from the bathtub and charms them with his winning personality, the family decides to keep him after all. The family becomes extremely attached to Lyle. One day a brass band parades by their house and the boy and his parents are amazed to learn that Lyle is in the parade entertaining the crowds. He becomes famous overnight. In search of fame and fortune, Hector decides to return for his crocodile. Although the boy and his parents do not want Lyle to go, they have no choice but to let Valenti take him. Hector and Lyle tour the world, but Lyle is so upset that he no longer is able to make people smile; he can only make them cry. Valenti realizes that he is not going to make a fortune by touring with a depressed crocodile and decides that things cannot remain the way they are. The animated story "Harry, The Fat Bear Spy" from "CBS Storybreak" is introduced by Bob Keeshan. In this tale, the inhabitants of the land of Bearmania have problems when the evil Green Bear causes the National Macaroon Factory to turn out green macaroons. Harry, a fat bear spy, who loves macaroons, is sent to solve the case with the help of a special agent named Fred. Harry and Fred begin by going to the macaroon factory to talk to the owner, Mrs. Sweetly. They are followed by an agent of the Green Bear who is carrying a large trunk. Upon arriving at the factory, they learn that Mrs. Sweetly's janitor, Boris, mysteriously disappeared one day and was immediately replaced by a bear named Loveable Bill. Then Harry and Fred attempt to find more clues outside of the factory, but once again realize that they are being followed by another secret agent with a large trunk. They try to loose the sinister bear by stepping into Harry's friend's hanger. His friend, whose name is Captain Jack, only has two working flying machines. One is stolen by the agent they were trying to loose. The other is a contraption attached to a balloon that Harry and Fred quickly jump into, accidentally leaving Captain Jack behind. Not knowing how to fly the machine, Harry and Fred set out to find the Green Bear and discover why his agents carry large trunks with them.
