FROM FAST TO FAST: TISHA B'AV TO YOM KIPPUR (TV)
Summary
This program examines the origins and meanings of two holy days celebrated in the Jewish faith -- Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av. During the program, the following rabbis and religious leaders discuss the two holidays: Rabbi Gilbert S. Rosenthal of the New York Board of Rabbis; Rabbi Mychal Springer of the Hospital Chaplaincy, Inc.; Rabbi Jay H. Rosenbaum of the Congregation Habonim; Mecachem Rosensaft; Arlene Agus of the Portesky Foundation; and Rabbi David H. Lincoln, Rabbi Elana Zaiman, Cantor David Letkowitz, and Cantor Judith Naimark of the Park Avenue Synagogue. The topics discussed, which are interspersed with footage of a religious service held at the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City, include the following, among others: when the Jewish calender begins and ends; the significance of Yom Kippur and Tisha B'Av in Jewish history; why Jews usually fast on these holy days; and how the memory of the Holocaust victims has been incorporated into each holiday. Rabbi Rosenthal then explains the symbolism of the destruction of the first temple of Jerusalem and its effect on other religions; Rabbi Springer notes where Tisha B'Av is celebrated during modern times in Jerusalem and describes the scene at the Western Wall; Rabbi Rosenbaum comments on why Tisha B'Av usually doesn't mean anything to young Jews and what the holiday is supposed to mean to Jews; Mecachem Rosensaft explains what the holidays symbolize to many middle-aged Jews, why congregations at some synagogues remove their shoes and sit on the floor during certain prayers, and the meaning of the Book of Lamentations; Rabbis Rosenthal and Springer comment on the graphic images portrayed in Lamentations; Arlene Agus discusses the contrast between the language used throughout Lamentations and the image of Judaism; Rabbi Springer explains the different meanings that fasting has during these two holidays; Agus examines why most of the melodies were written as durges despite their expression of hopefulness; Rabbi Lincoln comments on how Jews are not only focused on their own suffering; and Rabbi Springer comments on how optimism is an important factor in Judaism.
