YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES, THE: PARIS, MAY 1919 (TV)

Summary

One in this adventure series about a young American who travels the world and becomes involved with the historical figures and events of his time. In this episode, Indiana works as a translator for the American Delegation at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919 and witnesses the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the chief agreement ending World War I. Here, Indy runs into his old friend, British soldier and writer, Thomas Edward Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) who is at Versailles with Prince Feisal for the cause of Arab independence. Lawrence introduces Indy to two of his friends: English author, archaeologist and Near Eastern official, Gertrude Bell, and English historian Arnold Joseph Toynbee. The four meet in the evenings for dinner and analysis of the day's events, giving Indiana a complex picture of the many factors -- including greed and the desire for power and retribution -- guiding French President Georges Clemeneau, British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, and a naive President Woodrow Wilson, who allows most of his fourteen-point plan to go by the wayside. As the conference continues, the German delegation is humiliated and forced to accept an impossible reparations agreement; the Arab world is carved up by England and France; and when Indy helps young Nguyen That Thanh (Ho Chi Minh) get his proposal viewed by the French government -- requesting basic equal rights and representation for the Vietnamese people -- the French official sleeps through his presentation. Indiana is torn as his youthful idealism comes face to face with Lawrence's growing cynicism and the observations of Toynbee, who believes that the outcome of the Paris Peace Conference will have tragic reverberations in Germany, the Middle East, and other parts of the world later in the twentieth century. After his experience at Versailles, Indiana decides the world of diplomacy is not for him. Boarding a train out of Paris, he tells his friend Lawrence that he will return to the United States to study archaeology. Commercials deleted.
