LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: SANCTUARY (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In this episode, Detectives Briscoe and Logan investigate the death of a twelve-year-old black boy who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident in Harlem. The driver, Joshua Berger, turns himself in, stating that he fled the scene of the crime because he was too terrified to remain in the all-black neighborhood. Forensic reports prove that Berger was not exceeding the speed limit and did attempt to stop the car to avoid hitting the child. He therefore did not break the law. The D.A.'s office decides to suspend his licence and require him to do community service as punishment for fleeing the scene of the accident. Problems arise when a black minister, the Reverend Ott, decides that Berger was given special treatment because he is a Jew. The reverend's speeches to the people of Harlem result in a riot in which a black teenager, Isaac, brutally murders an Italian man. His defense attorney, Shambala Green, contends that Isaac is not responsible for his actions since he has been put down his entire life by the system and was influenced by the crowd to commit an action that he would never do under normal circumstances. Stone argues that though Isaac's resentment of white people may be justified, his actions are not. Commercials deleted.
