One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. Moderated by Museum television curator Ron Simon, this seminar examines the twenty-five year history of the daytime serial "All My Children." Simon begins the evening with a screening of program highlights from 1970 onward. After the screening, the following panelists join him on stage: creator Agnes Nixon; executive producer Felicia Minei Behr; and actors Susan Lucci, Julia Barr, and Michael E. Knight. The panelists discuss the following topics, among others: Nixon's original development of the serial; the technological developments since 1970, including electronic editing, which have improved the quality of the show; the genesis of the "Erica Kane" character; the original audition recollections of the three actors; the new production look for 1995-1996, which includes a new scenic designer, costume design team, lighting, make-up, and cameras; the way in which Nixon attacks social issues on the program; and storylines that have helped define Erica Kane. Audience questions lead to comments on the following topics, among others: how the group feels about pre-emptions due to the O.J. Simpson murder trial; the loyal, ensemble quality of the cast; the size and responsibilities of the writing staff; the loss of Frances Heflin, who played "Mona Kane" for many years; the program's representation of various religions and ethnicities; mapping out long-term plot lines and character arcs; the recent emergence of on-line services, which keep actors and producers in touch with fans; the still innacurate picture of true serial viewership offered by the standard ratings systems; and the public's fascination with villainous characters.
