NORTHERN EXPOSURE: THE QUEST (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman establishes his first medical practice. This episode marks Joel's departure from Cicely, Alaska. Joel, who has become more relaxed and carefree, drags Maggie along on his trek to find the mythical "jeweled city of the North," which appears on an ancient map of the Aleutian Islands he has found. Maggie feels Joel may have lost his mind, but she follows him on the trek anyway. Back in Cicely, Michelle is writing a review of the Brick for Alaskan Highways magazine, so Holling and Shelly give her the royal treatment. Michelle cannot find anything positive to write about the food, but fears hurting Holling and Shelly's feelings with a bad review. And Chris presents Dr. Phillip Capra with a malpractice lawsuit for a routine ear cleaning that appears to have gone awry. Meanwhile, Maggie changes her opinion about the Arthurian quest for the mythical city when they are confronted by a Japanese hermit and sidetracked at a blissful shiatzu massage parlor. They recognize these obstacles as archetypes from Joseph Campbell's fabled "hero's journey," especially upon reaching a bridge, where their old friend Adam insists they answer a riddle in order to cross. Then, huddled in a pup tent, Joel and Maggie recall their tumultuous five-year history together. In a misty clearing they spot a luminous skyline, and Joel recognizes the oddly familiar "jeweled city of the North." Joel ventures toward the big city, but Maggie refuses to follow him there. In the meantime, Chris recognizes the true reason he brought a hostile lawsuit against the new town doctor, and Michelle finds a solution to her diner dilemma. Commercials deleted.
