PICKET FENCES: CROSS EXAMINATION (TV)
Summary
One in this series of off-beat dramas that often focuses on social issues as it chronicles the lives of Rome, Wisconsin, residents, including town Sheriff Jimmy Brock; his wife Dr. Jill Brock; their three children, Kimberly, Matthew, and Zachary; and his two deputies Kenny Lacos and Maxine Stewart. In this Christmas episode, a critically injured young woman ignites a religious and legal controversy when it is learned that she apparently became pregnant through an immaculate conception. Devoutly religious Dana Marshall -- who is comatose after a car accident -- is four months pregnant even though a hospital medical examination proves conclusively that she is a virgin. Matters are further complicated because her prognosis for survival is poor unless the fetus is aborted. Although skittish church officials are reluctant to immediately accept the unborn child as the Second Coming for fear of a hoax, they employ an attorney to argue against allowing doctors to perform an abortion. Meanwhile, Zack loses faith in the holiday when he is told that there is no Santa Claus. Commercials deleted.
