50 {FIFTY} YEARS OF FUNNY FEMALES (TV)

Summary

This special pays tribute to comediennes who have proven their talents through the media of television and film. The first segment of this program consists of clips involving "girl talk," focusing on the topics of pregnancy, marriage, men, sex, and weight. This segment includes clips from the following television series and motion pictures, among others: "Grace Under Fire," in which Grace and her neighbor discuss conception; "I Love Lucy," in which Lucy informs Ethel that she is going to have a baby; "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," in which Phyllis talks to Mary about the "realistic" aspects of marriage; "The Golden Girls," in which Dorothy, Rose, and Blanche realize how often they talk about sex; "Designing Women," in which Suzanne shows her friends the new clothes she has bought after putting on weight; "All in the Family," in which Gloria attempts to talk to her mother about a sexual problem; and "Cheers," in which Diane and Carla have an unusual sentimental moment.

The next segment consists of clips involving female battles. This segment includes clips from the following television series and motion pictures, among others: "Death Becomes Her," in which two enemies attempt to physically hurt each other, but find that their unique situation does not allow them to do so; "Saturday Night Live," in which two female journalists argue over their style of reporting the news; "Cheers," in which Carla enjoys calling Diane a couple of nasty names; "The Cosby Show," in which Mrs. Huxtable meets with a trainer to discuss losing five pounds in six days; "Outrageous Fortune," in which two women argue over the affection they received from the same man; and "Ruthless People," in which a kidnapper informs her captive that her husband does not want to pay the ransom to get her back.

The following segment includes clips of famous stand-up comediennes, including the following: Joan Rivers, who comments on the problems women have with dating; Ellen DeGeneres, who talks about the act of getting a massage from a stranger; Moms Mabley, who discusses her marriage to an old man; Paula Poundstone, who comments on checking into a hotel; Phyllis Diller, who talks about peeping Toms; Pam Stone, who jokes about men and their sexual fantasies; and Totie Fields, who discusses exercising.

The next segment examines the topic of physical comedy, with clips from the following series and motion pictures, among others: "The Lucille Ball Show," in which Lucy accidentally continues to hurt a young worker, portrayed by John Ritter; "I Love Lucy," in which Lucy attempts to study ballet; "Ellen," in which Ellen tries an exercise program; "Private Benjamin," in which the new private contends with exercising in the Army; "The Jerk," in which a female knife thrower demonstrates her skills; and "Laverne and Shirley," in which the two best friends find themselves battling a fold-away bed.

The next segment covers relationships between men and women by showing clips from the following series and motion pictures, among others: "Burns and Allen," in which Gracie talks to George about going to the doctor's office with her friend; "Mad About You," in which Paul and Jamie discuss Valentine's Day; "The Sid Caesar Show," in which Caesar portrays a doctor attempting to help an amnesia patient, portrayed by Imogene Coca; "Pillow Talk," in which a woman finds herself being kidnapped from her apartment by her nemesis; "Young Frankenstein," in which Dr. Frankenstein's assistant mistakes his orders for a sexual come-on; "Love and Death," in which a couple discuss their philosophical views; "Desk Set," in which an intelligent pair meet for lunch; "The Jack Benny Show," in which a fast-talking man tries to pick up a female sales clerk; "When Harry Met Sally," in which a good friend attempts to console his best friend, who happens to be of the opposite sex; "Cheers," in which Sam tries to deal with a drunken Rebecca; "High Anxiety," in which a woman thinks she is receiving an obscene phone call; "Born Yesterday," in which a woman feels insulted when a man alludes to her being thirty; "Maude," in which Maude and Walter argue; "Bullets Over Broadway," in which the girlfriend of a gangster attempts to learn her lines for a play, much to the distress of her bodyguard, who also fancies himself a writer; "Seinfeld," in which three friends discuss faking orgasms; "War of the Roses," in which a couple analyzes the reasons why their relationship is falling apart; and "Home Improvement," in which a couple argues over the plight of their convertible.

The next segment shows various clips of men in women's clothing, including clips from the following series and motion pictures, among others: "Flip Wilson"; "The Monsters"; "Bosom Buddies"; "Some Like It Hot"; "M*A*S*H*"; and "Tootsie." The final segment covers the plight of the single woman and contains clips from the following films and television programs, among others: "Sister Act," in which a nightclub singer finds herself in a monastery hiding from the mob; "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," in which Mary talks to Rhoda about becoming an older single woman; "My Cousin Vinny," in which a young woman vents her feelings about her unmarried state; and "Soap Dish," in which a woman confesses her past sins.
