Summary

This International Emmy Award-winning documentary offers eyewitness accounts of the life, death, and lasting influence of Anne Frank, the inspirational teenager who was a victim of the holocaust. The following people give insight into the life and thoughts of Anne Frank: Laureen Nussbaum, Hanneli Goslar, and Isa Baschwitz, all neighbors of the Frank family; Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father; Miep Gies, an employee and good friend of Otto Frank's; Jasqueline van Maarsen, Anne's best friend; Anne's cousin Berndt Elias; Bloeme Evers-Emden, a classmate of Anne's sister; Peter Pepper, the son of Dr. Pfeffer who hid with the Franks at the beginning of the war; Hans Wijnberg, the son of the owner of the warehouse with the annex where the Franks hid; and Sal de Liema, Rachel van Amerongen-Frankfoorder, Rose de Liema, and Frieda Menco, who were all survivors of the Westerbork Temporary Prison Camp. These people comment on the following topics, among others: the Franks' move to Holland in the 1930s; Anne's behavior as a child; Anne's intelligence and need for attention; the different personalities within the Frank family; Otto Frank's faith in the Netherlands; how Nazi restrictions affected the Jews; Anne Frank's last birthday in freedom; the way in which Anne addressed her diary; Anne's interest in sex; the hiding place Otto Frank prepared for the family; the way in which Otto's four employees helped to keep the Franks' whereabouts a secret once they had to go into hiding; the way in which Anne responded when Miep Gies visited the Franks; the fictional correspondence Anne invented; the children who were taken away by the Nazis; the pictures that hung in Anne's hiding place; the relationship between Anne and the various people she was in hiding with; the English invasion; the betrayal of the Franks; how Anne's diary was saved from the Nazis; Miep Gies's desperate attempts to save her friends; the Westerbork Prison; Auschwitz; the treatment of the prisoners in the concentration camps; the repercussions of Anne's bout with scabies; Otto Frank's method of survival in the camps; Bergen-Beisen Concentration Camp; the last months in the lives of Anne and her sister, Margot; postcards and letters Otto Frank sent to his mother in Switzerland; Otto Frank's search for his daughters; Anne Frank's diary as an emblem of the era of World War II; and Anne Frank's need not to have lived in vain. Included in this documentary is footage of the following: the Nazi propaganda film "The Eternal Jew"; Nazi rallies; Hitler's rise to power; ice skaters in Holland; Otto Frank's film made to promote a jam product; footage of Amsterdam during the War; the silent movie "Rin Tin Tin," which Anne and her friends enjoyed watching; the annex in which the Frank family hid; people being hauled off by the Nazis; the Allied soldiers; work camps; Auschwitz Concentration Camp; Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp; the British liberation of Bergen-Belsen; the liberation of Auschwitz; death marches; the touring exhibition which carries Anne Frank's message; and the only known moving footage of Anne Frank. Also included is footage of the first meeting of Peter Pepper and Miep Gies, the woman who helped protect Pepper's father during the war, and rare archival photos of the Frank family. The interviews with Otto Frank are from the 1970s.
