Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson's special guests are Clint Eastwood, David Letterman, and Bob Hope. During his monologue, Carson -- who will retire from "The Tonight Show" the following week -- comments on the following topics, among others: the huge number of people waiting in line to get tickets for his final programs; the frugality of General Electric; and President George Bush's misguided campaign efforts to teach fly-fishing to inner-city children. Next Carson presents an excerpt from an April 1990 program -- a sketch set at a funeral in which Carson plays a man in the thesaurus business eulogizing a fallen comrade. Carson's first guest, Clint Eastwood, discusses the directorial style of Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone, with whom he made several films; what it was like to act with an orangutan; and his term as mayor of Carmel, California. David Letterman joins them and tells humorous stories about the following topics: meeting Eastwood for the first time years before; a famished woman he sat next to on the flight from New York; and his attempts to rid his dog of some rotten meat the canine had consumed. Next, Bob Hope shares his thoughts about the many honorary degrees conferred upon him and his upcoming special, a clip of which is then screened. Includes commercials and promos.
