Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, Carson's guests are entertainer Bob Hope, comic/actor Robin Williams, and singer Tony Bennett. In Carson's opening monologue he comments on the following topics, among others: fruitcakes; modern versions of Christmas songs and movies, such as "Jessica Hahn's Christmas at the Playboy Mansion"; Christmas cards from the White House and the Gorbachevs; potential Democratic candidates; and the rocky relationships of the year, including Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Madonna and Sean Penn, and Sylvester Stallone and his wife. Carson's dialogue with Ed McMahon focuses on "The Tonight Show's" To Do Christmas list, including tasks such as making a snowman on your mailman's lawn out of all the Ed McMahon envelopes he has delivered. Carson's first guest, Robin Williams, discusses the following topics among others: Michael Jackson's eccentricities such as traveling with an oxygen tank and pet monkey Bubbles, and collecting the Elephant Man's bones; performing for the Royal Family in England; the stress of the holidays; Southerners in the Vatican; fear of sex in the Eighties; gay culture in San Francisco; and his upcoming movie "Good Morning, Vietnam" (a clip is then shown). Next, they are joined by Bob Hope, who talks about his upcoming tour in the Persian Gulf with Barbara Eden, the All American Football Team, the Superbowl Cheerleaders, Miss USA, and Connie Stevens (a clip is shown); past tours he has made during wartime; his unwillingness to enter politics; the impossibility of Carson retiring from show business, and the length of his career compared with Hope's. Finally, Tony Bennett sings "White Christmas" and joins the others. They discuss Bennett's album, "Tony Bennett Performs Berlin," and composer Irving Berlin; how Bob Hope discovered Bennett and helped him come up with his stage name; Bennett's painting career which was launched on "The Tonight Show," and his charitable work with Danny Thomas for the St. Jude Hospital.
