ER {E.R.}: DEAD OF WINTER (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital. This episode concerns a group of twenty-two children suffering from malnutrition and other maladies, discovered by paramedics in an abandoned house. The woman responsible for this "family" buys crack using welfare checks intended for the children's care. Most of the kids are sent to a children's shelter to await a custody hearing once their health is addressed, but a boy named Michael needs a hernia operation and unwittingly teaches the callous Dr. Benton a lesson in compassion. Meanwhile, Dr. Vucelich gives Carter responsibility of the terminally ill Mrs. Rubadoux, but Carter is distressed when his efforts yield no results. Dr. Greene examines the Sweet family for various ills, but they vanish before he can explain to the mother that she has a dangerous cancer condition. Also, Greene meets with a sixty-nine-year-old man who has no will to live since the death of his wife; and Dr. Benton delivers twins for a woman who was unaware of her pregnancy and believed she was merely overeating. In the meantime, Dr. Greene is served divorce papers by his wife, and Jeanie's estranged husband wants to give their marriage another chance -- but Jeanie is still reeling from an unfavorable evaluation on her work as a physician's assistant.
