POLITICALLY INCORRECT WITH BILL MAHER {FAYE ANDERSON, JULIANNE MALVEAUX, DOWNTOWN JULIE BROWN, VICTORIA ROSWELL} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of spontaneous comedy talk shows hosted by Bill Maher. Maher presides over a no-holds-barred forum whose members come from the worlds of politics, journalism, and entertainment in order to discuss current events -- no matter how controversial. In this program, Maher welcomes four African-American women to explore the pros and cons of the "Million Women March" held the previous weekend in Washington, D.C. The guests are Faye Anderson, president of the Douglass Policy Institute; syndicated columnist Julianne Malveaux; ex-MTV vee-jay Downtown Julie Brown; and actress Victoria Rowell. Maher announces that the group will probably take some liberties with the show's topic since none of the women on the show actually attended the march. They all present their excuses (Faye Anderson: "It was cold and rainy that day!") and discuss the coverage they saw of the event. A brief discussion of rapper/spoken-word artist/activist/author Sister Souljah follows, though Maher seems confused about who she is and to what the women are referring. In the end all of the guests agree that keynote speaker Winnie Mandela delivered a powerful address, but they disagree on the importance of the event itself. Malveaux explains that she believes that it is dangerous to confuse marching for a cause with actual activism. The program veers off topic when Maher gets distracted by one panelist's colorful take on male-female relationships, and the remainder of the discussion explores the question of why women stay in relationships with unavailable men who have proven themselves to be untrustworthy. Malveaux attributes this tendency to an age-ist double-standard, while Brown thinks women are just more needy than men. The other panelists take her to task for this comment. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
