PRIMETIME LIVE {ELLEN: UNCENSORED; DEADLY PURSUIT; GOOD HOUSEKEEPING} (TV)
Summary
One in this news magazine series co-anchored by Diane Sawyer and Sam Donaldson. The first segment, "Ellen: Uncensored," concerns the possible reasons for the cancellation of the comedy television series, "Ellen." Ellen DeGeneres, the openly lesbian actress who introduced leading gay characters to broadcast television, argues that like any minority group, gays are entitled to non-discriminatory representation in the media. ABC president Robert Iger, who backed the cancellation of "Ellen," explains that a major network cannot push a radical political agenda or present "adult" material that will alienate large portions of society. The segment "Deadly Pursuit" examines the prevalence of high-speed police chases that result in injuries and fatalities, and the immunity of the police, particularly in California. Included are interviews with accident victims from these chases, their lawyers, and police department representatives. The segment examines "Sacramento vs. Lewis," a case that brings the issue of police liability to the Supreme Court, and ways the police department can reduce chases without increasing the crime rate. Finally, the history of the infomercial is elucidated in "Good Housekeeping"; the segment debunks infomercials with help from the editors at Good Housekeeping magazine, who test various products advertised on television. Several products are rated, ranked, and critiqued by the magazine, including the George Foreman grill, Space Bag home storage, the Brown and Crisp cooking bag, and the Citrus Express. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
