WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: DISNEY'S ANIMAL KINGDOM: THE FIRST ADVENTURE (TV)
Summary
This special presentation features a musical look at Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney World in Florida. Walt Disney chairman and CEO Michael Eisner introduces the program by stressing the importance of animals in Disney films. Then, Ladysmith Black Mambazo performs the first musical number, "Circle of Life" from "The Lion King," on location at the park. Host Drew Carey explains that the park was made by researching the topography of Africa and recreating these natural sites in Florida with the help of architects and engineers. Actress Jane Seymour and her family then take a safari through the grounds and view okapi, monkeys, hippopotami, ostriches, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, crocodiles, rhinoceros, elephants, and leopards. Next, the Mowri family visits Dinoland, where imagineers and audio animatronics bring dinosaurs back to life, and then journeys through an asteroid storm similar to one that scientists theorize ended the age of dinosaurs. Paul Rodriguez visits the Tree of Life and wears 3-D glasses to view an animated feature about insects, and then Carey presents film clips about how this enormous arboreal structure was constructed. After Ladysmith Black Mambazo performs another song, Carey takes a safari ride and views elands, cheetahs, and flamingos. Next, naturalist Jane Goodall speaks about her experiences researching chimpanzees and shows footage of her work in the Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania. Next is a tour of an area devoted to the African lowland gorilla, as well as the park's Conservation Station, featuring interactive displays dedicated to the care and protection of animals in the wild and captivity. Also, Kimberly Scott sings "We Are One" from "The Lion King: Simba's Pride"; Goodall speaks about the similarities between man and other animals; and the program concludes with Scott reprising "Circle of Life." Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
(Network varies; this series was also telecast on NBC from 1961 to 1981 and on CBS from 1981 to 1983.)
