ELLEN: A HOLLYWOOD TRIBUTE (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the quirky misadventures of a flippant, former Los Angeles bookstore manager named Ellen Morgan. In this two-part episode, newswoman Linda Ellerbee hosts a mock documentary that examines the illustrious career of Ellen DeGeneres, dating back to the beginnings of television. Ellerbee and DeGeneres discuss the twists and turns her career has taken, accompanied by comments from DeGeneres' colleagues and competitors and rare clips from her career. Topics discussed and parodied include the following: her pioneering role as a pregnant woman in the early days of television; the influence of her vaudeville and radio career on her work as a comedienne; the way she found a partner for her comedy routine; the reason for the dissolution of the partnership; her career on Broadway prior to the birth of television; her gig as host of the popular game show "Who's the Commie?"; the way she literally stumbled into the lead role on "Ellen" during the sitcom's screen tests; the original, unaired pilot episode for the sitcom; her feelings about being a spokeswoman for a new generation of fans; the way the show adapted to the civil unrest of the late 1960s and early 1970s; the show's transformation into a sex-oriented series as the 1980s approached; and the show's modern-day popularity and controversy. Includes cameo appearances by Jennifer Aniston, Bea Arthur, Richard Benjamin, Glenn Close, Tim Conway, Cindy Crawford, Ted Danson, Phil Donahue, Woody Harrelson, Helen Hunt, Christine Lahti, Julianna Marguiles, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Mary Steenburgen, among others. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include Pierce Brosnan and Bernard Lee for Visa credit cards. This program is closed-captioned.
