LARRY SANDERS SHOW, THE: FLIP {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The last in this comedy series starring Garry Shandling as Larry Sanders, a late-night talk show host. In this episode, Larry is working out the details for his final show, while Hank is developing a speech that he is eager to deliver toward the end of the telecast. The rest of the staff cannot handle the impending emotional farewell and Artie tries to keep everyone in good spirits. An impressive collection of A-list celebrities are slated to appear on the final show, but Larry feels that one major celebrity is missing and runs out to the parking lot to inquire whether Warren Beatty is available. After that fails, the notion of getting David Duchovny arises and Larry is uneasy about him because of the star's physical attraction to Larry. Giving into the pressure, Larry meets David at his hotel and Larry gets more then he bargained for, including David's agreement to appear. Meanwhile, Jon Stewart has been promised Larry's job and the new host personally thanks him. On his way to the set, Larry is confronted by past employees with final messages for Larry. Once the show begins, Jim Carrey performs an outrageous singing number but has harsh words for Larry during the commercial break. Backstage, Tom Petty and Clint Black argue over who will be singing Larry a goodbye song, and Greg Kinnear steps in, but a scuffle breaks out and Bruno Kirby and Artie try to break it up. Then, Carol Burnett shocks Larry by bringing out Ellen DeGeneres to prove that he is a liar. Following that embarrassing moment, Sean Penn joins Larry and says nothing harsh until the commercial break. And Tim Allen suggests that they spend time together and then rescinds the offer. Finally, Hank is about to deliver his farewell speech, but he is surprisingly interrupted by Jerry Seinfeld. While Jerry and Larry are talking, Hank blurts out the rest of the speech. As the show winds down, Clint Black sings as Artie informs Kirby that he has been bumped. Larry then delivers his final monologue to the audience and once the show is officially off-the-air, he needs help getting off his stool. Later, Hank flies into a rage at Larry and Artie and storms out of the empty studio, only to reappear in tears.
