STANLEY SIEGEL SHOW, THE {OMAR SHARIF} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk/interview programs, hosted by Stanley Siegel. This episode features an interview with actor Omar Sharif. Siegel begins by introducing Ford models Chris O'Connor and Erin Gray and fashion designer Fontaine, who are excited about meeting Omar Sharif. He then goes on to announce that Princess Anne has just given birth to a child and tries to speak with her on the telephone, first calling Buckingham Palace and then Saint Mary's Hospital in London, but he never manages to get hold of the Princess. While on the phone, Siegel is joined by Sharif, who has just arrived in the studio direct from an interview on "The Today Show," and they talk briefly about Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's announcement of his intention to visit Israel. After a commercial break, Siegel formally introduces Sharif, and they begin a discussion, using Sharif's book, "The Eternal Man," as a jumping-off point. The conversation wends from Sharif's first marriage to his "immense capacity for loving" to his belief that men need to be more feminine in their lovemaking techniques. Siegel then brings the conversation back around to Israeli/Egyptian relations, and Sharif talks about the importance of Egypt in the Arab world, his meetings with Sadat, and his desire to see peace in the Middle East. He talks about beginning work on "Funny Girl" at the time of the Six-Day War and recalls that Barbra Streisand's mother was uncomfortable about her daughter's work with an Egyptian. Sharif then admits that he was "very much in love" with Streisand but found his love unrequited. Next, after Siegel and Sharif read from T.E. Lawrence's "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" and talk about King Farouq and his failings, Siegel asks Sharif to name "the most unforgettable woman you've ever known." Sharif gives that honor to Anouk Aimee, and he relates an anecdote describing her generosity as a lover. In the final segment of the program, Gray shares a story about being stood up by Sharif at the premiere of "Funny Girl," O'Connor calls Sharif's opinions of lesbianism "very European," and Sharif claims that the reports of his sexual encounters have been greatly exaggerated. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
