NORTHERN EXPOSURE: KADDISH FOR UNCLE MANNY (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman is forced to establish his first medical practice. In this episode, Joel learns that his Uncle Manny has died, but Joel cannot get to Florida for the funeral. Joel promises his aunt that he'll say the Kaddish, the Jewish prayers for the dead, but he can only do that in the presence of nine other Jews, according to Jewish law. Also, Chris runs into the Miller brothers from West Virginia, who have a one-hundred-fifty-year-old family feud to settle with the Stevens family. Chris enlists the help of Bernard, who cannot understand his brother's motives. Meanwhile, Marilyn needs a new dance partner for the annual Cajun two-step contest and picks Holling since he is light on his feet. But Shelly becomes jealous. As Chris anxiously trains for the big battle, Bernard admits that he has never been in a fight before. When Maurice organizes a search for Jewish people who can help Joel, one by one, the townspeople introduce Joel to Alaskan Jews they have found. In the meantime, Bernard suddenly wants to battle the Millers, even though fighting betrays his principles. And Joel asks Maurice to call off the search for Jews because he feels uncomfortable praying with complete strangers. As the two families square off, Joel finds his own way to pay his last respects to his uncle. Commercials deleted.
