NORTHERN EXPOSURE: SHOFAR, SO GOOD (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy/drama series about the colorful inhabitants of Cicely, a rural Alaskan town where native New Yorker Joel Fleischman establishes his first medical practice. In this episode, Joel and Marilyn have a disagreement about her work schedule, and he fires her. It is time for the annual fox hunt, and Maurice plays host to an honored guest, Lady Anne from England. For the hunt, Maurice has imported a young, beautiful fox, which Ruth-Anne does not appreciate. Also, Holling's older daughter is supposed to be flying into Cicely to see Miranda for the first time, but Holling is deeply disappointed when she fails to appear. With the arrival of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, Joel tries to explain the meaning of Judaism's high holidays to Ed, who is practicing to become a shaman. As Joel rationalizes his dismissal of Marilyn, Maggie accuses him of being insensitive. Meanwhile, Maurice prepares to feed his prized fox, but he is dismayed to find that the fox is missing. After launching a search party, the fox is found at Ruth-Anne's house -- but she refuses to surrender the animal, causing Maurice to feel embarrassed in front of Lady Anne. And while Joel sleeps, Rabbi Schulman appears and claims to be the ghost of Yom Kippur past, present, and future. Joel is forced to examine the travesties he has committed in Cicely, and views his possible future in New York. Meanwhile, Ed offers to ease Holling's emotional pain the only way he knows how, and Maurice regrets his invitation to Lady Anne. Ultimately, Joel comprehends the value of Cicely in his life, and realizes what he must do to atone for his trespasses. Commercials deleted.
