ARMISTEAD MAUPIN'S MORE TALES OF THE CITY {EPISODES 1 & 2} (TV)
Summary
Episodes one and two in this six-episode mini-series about the interconnected lives of people residing in San Francisco in 1977, continuing from the mini-series "Tales of the City." In episode one, Mary Ann invites Michael on a cruise to Acapulco, Mexico, courtesy of her deceased boss, Edgar Halcyon; Mona fends off her snooty mother, Betty; socialites Beauchamp and DeDe Halcyon Day are busy feuding; and Mona leaves San Francisco, much to Mrs. Madrigal's dismay. Other highlights include the following: DeDe cheers up Frannie, her grieving mother; Mona, under the dangerous influence of angel dust, befriends an eccentric elderly lady named Mother Mucca at a bus depot; Brian, from his rooftop pad, pulls out binoculars and undresses for a female voyeur across the street; Mona accepts a job as phone operator at Mother Mucca's house of prostitution in Winnemucca; Michael and Mary Ann are curious about a mysterious hunk on the ship; and DeDe tells Beauchamp that the twins' father is Chinese. In episode two, Beauchamp pressures DeDe to have an abortion and she refuses; Michael tries to amuse himself on a ship filled with heterosexuals; and Mrs. Madrigal tells Brian that she had a sex change and that she is actually Mona's father. Other highlights include the following: during "The Sonny and Cher Show," DeDe packs her bags and leaves Beauchamp; Mother Mucca expects an important client who wants "a new girl"; Vita tells Frannie about an elite rejuvenation club for women over sixty; Mary Ann finds that Burke is clueless about late 1970s culture; Mother Mucca tries to persuade Mona to wear an unusual costume for the important client; at a rooftop party, wealthy gays gossip about DeDe's pregnancy while admiring her gynecologist, Jon Fielding; unlike Michael, Mary Ann and Burke enjoy a passionate evening; and Brian gratifies himself while the anonymous female voyeur -- and the wealthy gays -- watch from afar. And in Winnemucca, Mona finds her own name in a cookbook, prompting her to phone Mrs. Madrigal, who reveals the truth about their common heritage.
