Summary
One in this series of spontaneous comedy talk shows hosted by Bill Maher. Maher presides over a no-holds-barred forum, whose members come from the worlds of politics, journalism, and entertainment in order to discuss current events -- no matter how controversial. In this program, Maher talks with actress Sharon Lawrence, humorist Harry Shearer, musician Mary Cutrufello, and television writer Doug McIntyre. The program begins with a sketch in which Juli Ashton and Randy West play actors auditioning for a director (played by Maher) of a movie chronicling the relationship between President Bill Clinton and governmental intern Monica Lewinsky. This dramatization leads to a discussion between Maher and his guests about the issues of adultery and privacy that the President of the United States faces. They comment briefly on the following: the necessity of releasing to special prosecutor Kenneth Starr's report on the President to the public; the possibility of Starr's using the investigation as part of a political agenda to discredit and embarrass Clinton; the problem with judging a person's political ability based on his personal life; the tendency to hold elected officials to a higher standard than most citizens; Clinton's reputation as a liar who feels he's above the law; Clinton's lack of judgment in handling the situation involving Lewinsky; the magnitude of his perjury under oath; and the difference between natural human faults and criminal activity.
