ON THE ROAD WITH CHARLES KURALT {104-YEAR-OLD MAN; CYMBALS FACTORY; SLEIGHS; MISSION TRAIL; BOONTLING} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of television magazines, in which host Charles Kuralt presents clips from his twenty five years of travel journalism through the back roads of America. The first segment profiles 104-year-old Larry Lewis, who says the way to stay alive is to stay on the go. The ever-mobile Lewis, a banquet waiter whose formula for a long life involves guts and gumption, easily outruns Kuralt in a friendly race. Next, Kuralt visits the Avedis Zildjian Company of Quincy, Massachusetts, which has made cymbals since 1623. Kuralt learns that their metallurgical secret helps them produce most of the world's cymbals, with over 100,000 different tones; Kuralt watches while they produce and test the instruments. In the third segment, Kuralt takes a ride on an 1890 gentleman's courting sleigh with Carroll Mathews, who has been driving sleighs for over sixty years, to Hampton, Massachusetts. Following this, Kuralt visits the Mission Trail, now Highway 101, in California. After a history on the settlements, Kuralt offers a silent tour of the area using only visuals with no narration. Finally, Kuralt investigates "boontling," a variation of the English language invented by loggers and sheep ranchers in the California hill country, partly to confuse visitors not from the region. Area resident Jack June Kuralt, translates a few native terms and provides a history of their origins.

("On the Road with Charles Kuralt" consists of excerpts from Charles Kuralt's segments on the CBS Evening News, beginning in 1967. In the 1970s the show was aired in four special broadcasts, and in 1983 it was developed into a regular ten-week summer series. In addition, the series was reworked for and aired on the Travel Channel in 1993.)
