X-FILES, THE: JOSE CHUNG'S "FROM OUTER SPACE" (TV)
Summary
One in this series of science fiction dramas about FBI agents Mulder and Scully and their investigations into "unsolvable" cases involving paranormal phenomena. In this episode about subjective memories, Scully speaks with author Jose Chung, who is writing a book on alien abduction, to learn more about alleged abductions in Klass County, Washington. Flashbacks dramatize the events in question: a teenage couple have been traumatized and the girl has lost her memory, leading to speculations about date rape. Under hypnosis, the teenagers recall being abducted by aliens, including a cigarette-smoking gray creature. But the truth becomes complicated when other witnesses spout stories of threatening "men in black" and alien bodies. Another round of hypnotism with the girl yields different results: this time she remembers military personnel brainwashing her and feeding her stories of alien abduction. Mulder and Scully grow dubious when a witness claims that the threatening "men in black" are Mulder and Scully themselves, and asserts that they confiscated a videotape of an alien autopsy. The truth soon appears to be as malleable as the participants' changing perceptions, when bizarre theories of mud people living under the Earth are oddly corroborated by a missing Air Force lieutenant. Mulder then loses his memory after speaking with a "man in black" who resembles "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, leaving the FBI agents to wonder whether covert government operations, rather than alien abductions, are the true cause. Although Jose Chung chooses to document the tangled abduction tale for his book, "From Outer Space," Mulder fears the contradictions will undermine an already discredited field. Commercials deleted.
